1.  Overall.  Stains cover the wood and are sprayed overall in an uniform fashion.  When two coats are called for allow the first coat to dry well before the second.  Some systems require several stains.  Paints, toners, etc. follow the same rules.  In the case of paints a light sanding sometimes helps between coats.  Allow paint to dry before making color judgments.

2.  Clearcoat.  Often called a washcoat this low solids sealer seals off the stain and helps smooth the surface sanding properties.  You may reduce your own sealer.  Solids typically run in the 7% to 18% range.  Spray overall - dry and sand with 320 paper.

3.  Wiping Coat.  This is an oily material that brings out grain and creates contrast by the layering of color.  Apply to surface and wipe in a circular motion.  To leave a film brush with the grain until even.  Dry this coat well.

4.  Highlight.  Use steel wool or sandpaper to strike through the color in Step 3 allowing the colors in Step 1 to show through.  Highlight with grain.  The harder you bear down the more contrast.  Bear down too hard and you get bare wood showing.

5.  Sealer.  Spray uniform coat overall.  Dry well and sand with 320 paper.  Solids range from 18% to 23%.

6.  Hand Work.  Refer to guides for this one.  It includes hand pad, cowtail, crayon distress, dry brush and spatter.  It is good to sandwich these operations between topcoats.

7.  Topcoats.  We use lacquer unless it is a painted suite in which case we ship a butyrate lacquer at your request.  It has a prefix of 366.  Otherwise we make suggestions as to the lacquer sheen.  The factory puts three coats of lacquer with a light sanding between each coat.

***Factory Clearcoat Specs.  Washcoat may not be needed for Furniture that has been washed off.
